The 1930s semis across Beckenham and Orpington have eaves gaps a wasp queen can exploit in spring with little effort. By midsummer the nest is well established and it's often only the steady traffic in and out of one small gap that gives it away.
Woodland edges near Chislehurst
Housing right against the woodland at Chislehurst Commons gives wasps sheds and outbuildings to nest in on bigger plots, away from the eaves altogether. Nests in garden buildings like these can grow larger before anyone notices, simply because the sheds see less daily use than a house.
Signs to Look For
- A grey, papery nest the size of a football or larger, usually by late summer
- Wasps repeatedly entering and leaving one spot — a loft vent, eave or air brick
- A low buzzing or rustling sound from inside a wall, loft or shed
- More wasps than usual around bins, fruit trees or open windows
