Where Ealing's Wasps Build Their Nests

The larger Edwardian villas near Walpole Park and Ealing Broadway have generous eaves and mature garden trees, both places a queen wasp will readily start a nest in spring. By late summer a nest tucked into a loft eave here can grow to the size of a football, and it's often the noise from inside a wall or loft that gives it away before the wasps themselves are seen.

Southall's terraced gardens are smaller, and it's the shed roof or an outbuilding rather than the house eaves that most often gets used. A nest here can go unnoticed for longer simply because nobody's looking up at a shed roof the way they might check under house eaves, so activity is sometimes only spotted once wasps start bothering the garden itself.
Signs to Look For
- A grey, papery nest the size of a football or larger, usually by late summer
- Wasps repeatedly entering and leaving one spot — a loft vent, eave or air brick
- A low buzzing or rustling sound from inside a wall, loft or shed
- More wasps than usual around bins, fruit trees or open windows
