The Victorian terraces near the Chiswick border have plenty of old air bricks and loose soffit boards, both easy ways in for a queen wasp in spring. By late summer a nest built into a wall cavity here is usually first noticed as wasps repeatedly using one small gap.
Sheds and gardens in riverside Brentford
Brentford's older riverside streets and the newer waterside developments alongside them both come with sheds, courtyards and garden fencing where wasps build nests away from the main house, often going unnoticed until activity picks up in August.
Signs to Look For
- A grey, papery nest the size of a football or larger, usually by late summer
- Wasps repeatedly entering and leaving one spot — a loft vent, eave or air brick
- A low buzzing or rustling sound from inside a wall, loft or shed
- More wasps than usual around bins, fruit trees or open windows
