Ageing drains under Kingston's town centre
The streets around Kingston's market town centre carry some of the oldest drainage in the borough, running beneath shops, flats above them and the older residential streets close behind. A cracked pipe or a loose joint lets rats move from the sewer network into the ground under a building, and from there into floor voids with no obvious entry point visible outside. The Thames towpath nearby adds another route for rats already living along the riverbank.

- Burrows a few centimetres across in soil, under paving or beside a shed
- A stale, ammonia-like smell in cupboards or under the stairs
