Stockwell's postwar estates were largely fitted with wall-to-wall carpet, and the edges where that carpet meets the skirting board are where carpet beetle larvae tend to gather, feeding on trapped fibres and household debris. Communal areas and shared bin stores in blocks like these can also carry a source that spreads into individual flats over time.
Stored textiles in Vauxhall's conversions
The newer conversions near Vauxhall see carpet beetle larvae just as often in stored clothing and airing cupboards as in the carpets themselves, with damage sometimes only noticed when a jumper or blanket that hasn't been worn in a while turns out to have holes. The larvae feed on wool, fur and feathers wherever they collect undisturbed.
Signs to Look For
- Irregular holes in natural-fibre carpets, rugs, clothing or soft furnishings
- Small, bristly larvae ("woolly bears") in carpet edges, cupboards or under furniture
- Tiny shed larval skins gathering in corners or fabric folds
- Adult beetles, a few millimetres long, seen on windowsills in spring
