Leytonstone's terraced streets mostly have compact paved gardens, and the joints and edges in that paving give ants plenty of places to nest close enough to the back door for a trail into the kitchen to form fast once the weather warms.

Chingford's interwar semis have more garden to work with — lawn, borders, longer path edges — and a nest along any of those can send a trail toward the kitchen door just as readily. Whatever gap it's using under the units is only ever the last stretch of a route that starts well outside.
Signs to Look For
- A steady trail of ants heading to and from a food source
- Small mounds of fine soil near patios, paving or skirting boards
- Ants appearing around windows, doors or kitchen units, especially in warm weather
- Winged ants indoors, which can signal a nest close by
