Bexleyheath's fitted carpets collect fluff and shed hair along skirting boards and under heavy furniture — exactly the diet carpet beetle larvae need — and because the resulting holes can pass for moth damage, we look for the larvae themselves before saying which pest it is.

Bexley Village's Georgian and Victorian houses have original floorboards with gaps wide enough for larvae to shelter directly beneath the fitted carpet, and homes with more wool or natural-fibre furnishing tend to give them more to feed on.
Signs to Look For
- Irregular holes in natural-fibre carpets, rugs, clothing or soft furnishings
- Small, bristly larvae ("woolly bears") in carpet edges, cupboards or under furniture
- Tiny shed larval skins gathering in corners or fabric folds
- Adult beetles, a few millimetres long, seen on windowsills in spring
