The older mansion blocks around Hammersmith have roofline detailing with plenty of small gaps that a queen wasp can use to start a nest in spring, well out of sight from ground level. By the time a nest here is noticed, it's often already the size of a football, with wasps funnelling through a single vent or gap.

Fulham's terraced houses give wasps a more familiar option — the eaves above a bay window, or a shed roof in a smaller rear garden. A nest in a garden shed is often noticed later than a roof nest, simply because the buzzing blends into other garden noise for longer.
Signs to Look For
- A grey, papery nest the size of a football or larger, usually by late summer
- Wasps repeatedly entering and leaving one spot — a loft vent, eave or air brick
- A low buzzing or rustling sound from inside a wall, loft or shed
- More wasps than usual around bins, fruit trees or open windows
