Back doors and patios around Elm Park
Elm Park's compact 1930s semis were built with small rear gardens and patio areas close to the kitchen door, and ants trail in from nest sites under the paving straight to the nearest food source once the ground warms in spring and summer.
Larger gardens towards Upminster
Upminster's bigger plots give ants more nesting ground to work with — under sheds, along patio edges and beside garden walls — and a trail here can run a longer distance from nest to kitchen than in the more compact streets closer to Romford.
Signs to Look For
- A steady trail of ants heading to and from a food source
- Small mounds of fine soil near patios, paving or skirting boards
- Ants appearing around windows, doors or kitchen units, especially in warm weather
- Winged ants indoors, which can signal a nest close by
