Where Havering's Wasps Build Their Nests

The interwar semis that make up much of Hornchurch and Elm Park have low tiled roofs and simple eaves, both easy for a queen wasp to get into in spring. By late summer a nest tucked into a loft void here can hold thousands of workers, usually first noticed as a steady line of wasps using one gap in the soffit.
Sheds and fence lines on Upminster's larger plots
Upminster's detached and semi-detached houses tend to sit on bigger plots than the rest of the borough, with more sheds, outbuildings and garden fencing. Nests here turn up in shed roofs, under decking and in old fence posts as often as in the house itself, which changes where a treatment needs to reach.
Signs to Look For
- A grey, papery nest the size of a football or larger, usually by late summer
- Wasps repeatedly entering and leaving one spot — a loft vent, eave or air brick
- A low buzzing or rustling sound from inside a wall, loft or shed
- More wasps than usual around bins, fruit trees or open windows
