Patios and paving around Nunhead
The small paved gardens common around Nunhead and the rising ground near the cemetery give ants plenty of joints and edges to nest under, close enough to the house that a foraging trail across a patio door or windowsill is a short trip for them. A trail heading indoors usually leads back to a nest just outside, not inside the property itself.

Dulwich's older, larger houses often still have original timber windows and doors, and the gaps that develop around ageing frames as they settle are exactly the size an ant needs to get in. Kitchens closest to those older openings tend to be where the trail is first noticed.
Signs to Look For
- A steady trail of ants heading to and from a food source
- Small mounds of fine soil near patios, paving or skirting boards
- Ants appearing around windows, doors or kitchen units, especially in warm weather
- Winged ants indoors, which can signal a nest close by
