What Draws Carpet Beetles Into Southwark Flats

Many of Camberwell's Victorian houses have been converted into flats with fitted carpet laid over the original floorboards, and carpet beetle larvae will feed on the natural fibres in edges and under furniture that rarely gets moved. Skirting edges and the strip of carpet under a bed or wardrobe are the most common places we find the first signs.

Signs to Look For
- Irregular holes in natural-fibre carpets, rugs, clothing or soft furnishings
- Small, bristly larvae ("woolly bears") in carpet edges, cupboards or under furniture
- Tiny shed larval skins gathering in corners or fabric folds
- Adult beetles, a few millimetres long, seen on windowsills in spring
