From the trees to the roof line
Tree canopies, fence tops and open ground all present the same easy route to a grey squirrel; it moves through them all with equal ease, much as it does near Ruislip, where 1930s Metro-land suburban semis. A property near a mature tree usually has at least one branch reaching over the roofline, giving a squirrel a ready-made route in, provided there's a gap at the eaves to exploit, whether that's near West Drayton, where a village-turned-suburb close to the M4 and Heathrow, or elsewhere in the borough.
Ruislip and Northwood's established gardens
The mature gardens and tree-lined streets typical of Ruislip and Northwood give squirrels plenty of cover close to the roof line, and the larger detached and semi-detached houses here often have older, roomier lofts once a squirrel is inside.
Harefield's open edge
Out towards Harefield, close to the Colne Valley and open countryside, squirrels moving between woodland and nearby gardens are just as common a sight, even where the housing itself is more spread out than in the denser suburbs closer in.

What not to do
- Block the entry hole while squirrels may still be inside; they chew a new way out, sometimes into the house
- Put down poison in the loft
- Catch a squirrel and release it elsewhere - grey squirrels are an invasive non-native species and it is illegal to release one once caught
