About Squirrels

Gray squirrels are approximately 18 inches in length, which includes their 9 inch tail and they weigh about 1-1.5 lbs. as an adult. Their coloration is usually a grayish colour, however they can have tan hairs in the fur as well and they usually have a white belly. Their winter coat is grey above with a white underside and their summer coat is shorter, sleeker and more brownish grey Red squirrels have red/brown upper parts in summer but may show some grey on the back in winter, which can sometimes lead to some confusion.

Red squirrels are smaller, lighter, have ear tufts and prominent in the winter coat and brown on the legs and tail. Their natural habitats are wooded areas in tree cavities, and they can also be near hardwoods like oaks and hickory trees. They will also construct feeding shelters out of leafs. They generally have 2 litters a year, 2-4 young per litter and they normally breed in midwinter and late spring. Gestation is about 44 days. Their diet consists of bird eggs, insects, berries, fruit, vegetables, nuts and nestling birds, squirrels also like to hoard their food.

The Gray squirrels are most active during the day, and can inhabit the attic areas as well as crawl spaces. They like to enter the attic areas from your gutters and nearby trees and bushes. Installing gutter guards, or down spouts with screen may prevent them from climbing up to the roof through a down spout.

Dealing with a Squirrel in Your Loft in Finchley: What to Do

Discovering a squirrel in your loft can be a cause for concern. If you find yourself in such a situation in Finchley, it’s important to take appropriate steps to handle it effectively. Here are some recommendations on what to do if you have a squirrel in your loft:

  1. Stay Calm and Avoid Panic: It’s natural to feel startled or alarmed when you encounter a squirrel in your loft. However, it’s crucial to remain calm and avoid panicking, as sudden movements or loud noises may frighten the squirrel and cause it to become more agitated.
  2. Do Not Attempt to Catch or Remove the Squirrel Yourself: Squirrels can be agile and skittish, making it challenging to catch or remove them safely without the proper equipment and training. Instead of attempting a DIY approach, it’s advisable to seek professional help from a reputable wildlife control service in Finchley.
  3. Contact a Professional Wildlife Control Service: Reach out to a professional wildlife control service that specializes in squirrel removal. These experts have the knowledge, experience, and tools to handle squirrel infestations safely and effectively. They will assess the situation, develop a suitable plan, and use humane methods to remove the squirrel from your loft.
  4. Secure Potential Entry Points: While awaiting professional assistance, it’s important to prevent additional squirrels from entering your loft. Inspect your property for potential entry points, such as gaps, holes, or damaged areas, and seal them securely. This will help prevent further squirrel intrusions and protect your home from future infestations.
  5. Minimize Attractants: Squirrels are often drawn to food sources and shelter. To discourage squirrels from lingering in the area, remove any potential attractants from your loft or surroundings. This includes storing food items in secure containers, keeping the area clean and free of debris, and trimming overhanging tree branches that may provide easy access to your loft.
  6. Follow Professional Advice: Once the professional wildlife control service arrives, they will assess the situation, implement appropriate removal techniques, and provide recommendations to prevent future squirrel infestations. Follow their advice on securing your property and implementing preventive measures to minimize the chances of future squirrel encounters.

Remember, dealing with squirrels in your loft requires professional expertise to ensure a safe and humane resolution. By seeking assistance from a reputable wildlife control service in Finchley, you can address the squirrel infestation effectively and take steps to prevent future occurrences.
