Where Cockroaches Live in Barnet
Cockroaches need warmth, moisture and somewhere tight to hide. They are nocturnal and they harbour out of sight, so by the time one is seen in the open during the day the population is usually well established.
The newer blocks
Colindale, Grahame Park and the developments around them are exactly what cockroaches do well in: warm service risers running floor to floor, refuse chutes, and pipework voids that connect one flat to the next. A treatment that stops at the front door of the flat that reported it will usually be back within the season.
Commercial kitchens
The restaurant and takeaway parades along Golders Green Road, Ballards Lane, Burnt Oak Broadway and Brent Street have the heat, the moisture and the continuous food supply. Cockroaches harbour behind and beneath equipment, in motor housings and in the voids around pipework, which is why a surface clean does not touch them.
Houses
Less common in Barnet's suburban housing, but it happens — most often carried in with deliveries, second-hand appliances or luggage, and then established behind a fridge, a dishwasher or a boiler where it is permanently warm.
Signs of cockroaches
- Live insects seen at night, or any seen in daylight, which suggests crowding
- Small dark droppings like coarse ground pepper along edges and in cupboards
- Shed skins and egg cases in tight gaps behind and under equipment
- A musty, oily smell in an enclosed space
- Smear marks in damp areas where they run the same route
Why one flat is rarely the whole job
In a block, cockroaches are moving through the structure. Treating a single flat while the neighbours and the communal areas are untouched moves the problem rather than ending it. We will ask about the bin store, the risers and whether anyone else has reported anything before telling you what we expect.
