How Mice Travel Through a Converted Building
A conversion fits modern kitchens and bathrooms into a shell built for another purpose. Each one needs supply pipes, waste pipes, heating and cable, and those have to reach it from somewhere, so they are routed up risers, along the ceiling voids above corridors and behind panels at skirting height. The routes often run unbroken from one apartment to the next, and wherever a pipe passes through a wall or floor, the gap around it is a doorway for a mouse.
Boxing, kickboards and bath panels
Inside the apartment, the runs hide behind boxing in the corners of kitchens and bathrooms, under the units and behind the bath panel. Ceiling voids above corridors
Long corridors in these buildings often have a lowered ceiling that hides cable trays and pipework. A mouse in that space can pass a row of front doors and drop into whichever apartment has a gap around a pipe or a downlight. Dry lining against old walls
Where plasterboard is fixed on battens against a solid wall, the gap behind it can run the length of a room and join the floor void at the bottom. Mice treat it as a hidden passage, and a small gnawed hole at the base of a skirting may be the only thing you see.
What to Look For in an Apartment

First Steps in a Shared Building
- Move dry food, cereals and pet food into sealed containers
- Tell the managing agent and ask whether other apartments have reported mice
- Mention it to the neighbours either side and on the floors above and below
- Do not seal gaps around pipes while mice are still active, or they may be shut inside the boxing
- Keep poison out of ceiling voids and boxing, where a mouse can die out of reach
