Carpet beetle larvae eat animal fibres, feathers, fur and the fluff that collects in corners, and they live where things are not moved: storage cupboards, under beds, in boxes and along carpet edges. Bedding, cushions and clutter
Feather pillows and duvets, wool throws, old cushions and a coat forgotten on a hook are all food. When these sit in a cupboard or under a bed from one tenancy to the next, larvae can build up there and move into the carpet nearby. Landlords who keep a stock of spare bedding for furnished rooms should check it before it goes on a bed.
Eaves and the loft
In Hendon's interwar houses, birds often nest in the eaves or just inside the loft, and old nests are a classic source of carpet beetles. Signs in a Room
- Small, round, mottled beetles on windowsills, often in spring and early summer
- Short, bristly, brown larvae along skirting boards or under a bed
- Pale, empty larval skins in corners and in stored bedding
- Small irregular holes in wool clothes, blankets or felt
- Bare patches along carpet edges rather than in the open

Itching without bites

Why the top floor
Tenants in the rooms under the roof are often the first to find beetles, because those rooms are closest to the eaves and the loft. If yours is a top-floor room and the beetles keep appearing on the same windowsill each spring, mention it, as the source may be above the ceiling rather than in your room.
Before the Visit
Tell us which rooms are affected and whether there is stored bedding, a loft or a cupboard of left-behind things. Vacuum the room well, especially along skirting boards and under furniture, and empty the vacuum outside. Wash or bag bedding and clothes from the affected rooms. You will be told what to expect afterwards, and how long it takes depends on where the larvae are and how far they have spread. Get back in touch if larvae or beetles keep turning up.

Stopping It at the Next Changeover
Clear out what earlier tenants left, vacuum under beds and along the edges of every room during the summer gap, and keep spare bedding in sealed bags.
