Spiders and the Woodland Edge in Autumn
A garden that runs into hedges, long grass and trees, as many do around Pest Control Mill Hill, supports a lot of insects, and insects support spiders. By late summer many are fully grown. Garden spiders on the windows
The large webs across windows and between shrubs in September are usually garden orb-weavers. They live outside and rarely come in, but a window facing a hedge can have several at once.
Garages, sheds and lofts
Outbuildings full of stored things, and lofts in older houses near the woods, hold spiders all year. Log stores, garden furniture put away for the winter and boxes on a garage floor give them dry corners close to a steady supply of woodlice and other small insects. Older houses tend to have more of the small gaps spiders use: sash windows that no longer close tight, cellar or under-stairs spaces with air bricks, and old floorboards with gaps at the skirting. None of that is a fault that needs putting right urgently, but it explains why an old cottage can have more spiders indoors than a newer house on the same street. Are Any of Them Dangerous?
The spiders in Mill Hill homes are ordinary British species. False widow spiders are found in and around London houses, often round window frames and in sheds. They can bite if handled or trapped against skin, but bites are uncommon and usually mild. What Treatment Can and Cannot Do
Treatment can reduce spiders in the rooms that are treated. It cannot stop spiders arriving from a garden full of them, so the aim is fewer indoors, not none. - Brush down webs so you can tell whether new ones appear
- Move boxes and clutter away from skirtings and corners
- Say if the garage, conservatory or loft is part of the problem

Fit brush strips to garden and garage doors, cover air bricks with fine mesh, and seal gaps round window frames.
