The woodland edge that shapes so much of NW7, set out on Pest Control Mill Hill, has little to do with moths. What matters here is what is inside the house, and how often it gets moved. Larvae feed on wool, silk, fur and feathers, and they need somewhere dark where nobody treads.
Heirloom rugs
Hand-knotted wool rugs, especially old ones that have not been beaten or cleaned in years, are a favourite. The damage usually starts on the underside or under a piece of furniture standing on the rug, so the top can look fine while the back is being eaten. Turn a rug over now and then and look for bare threads, silk tubes or larvae.
Stair runners and landings
Wool runners on old staircases wear at the front of each tread but stay untouched at the sides and under the stair rods, which is where larvae settle. Halls, landings and stairs are not counted as rooms for pricing, so mention a runner when you book so it is covered in what is agreed.
Blanket chests, wardrobes and the spare room
Wool blankets, tweed coats, felt hats and cashmere put away for the summer are just as much at risk as carpets. Signs to Look For
- Small, pale, buff moths that run or flutter low rather than flying up
- Bare patches along skirting boards, under beds and beneath heavy furniture
- Thin silk tubes or cases, sometimes the same colour as the carpet
- Loose tufts or fluff that come away when you run a hand over the pile
- Holes in wool clothes or blankets taken out of storage

What You Can Do Now
- Vacuum edges, under furniture and beneath rugs thoroughly, then empty the vacuum outside
- Take stored wool out, shake it outdoors in the light and check it piece by piece
- Seal clean woollens in bags or boxes before putting them back
- Have valued rugs professionally cleaned if the damage is on the underside
- Throw away items too damaged to keep, sealed in a bag
