A flat above a shop shares far more with the business below than a front door. The pipes, the rear yard, the bins and often the floor structure itself are common to both, and pests do not recognise where one lease ends.
When the problem starts downstairs
Food shops and takeaways produce food waste, warmth and water — everything mice and cockroaches need. If a ground-floor unit has activity, the flat above will often see it next, typically in the kitchen or bathroom where pipework rises through the floor. Tell the shop owner or your landlord what you are seeing; a treatment upstairs alone may not hold.
Rear yards and bins

- Gnawed bin bags in the rear yard
