Spiders in Brent Homes
A spider in the bath in September is not an infestation. Large house spiders are simply more visible in autumn, when the males wander in search of a mate. A room where webs and spiders return week after week is a different matter.
Why some houses have more
Spiders follow food. A house with a lot of flies, moths or other small insects will have more spiders, which is why persistent spider numbers can be a sign of another insect problem worth looking at. Clutter, stored boxes and undisturbed corners give them shelter.
Where they build up
- Cellars and basements in Brent's older terraces

- Around window frames and outside lights, which attract insects
False widow spiders
The noble false widow is now common in London, usually around window frames, sheds and outside walls. Bites are rare and most are compared to a bee sting, but anyone with a reaction should seek medical advice.
Reducing spiders yourself
Vacuum webs and egg sacs regularly, reduce clutter in storage areas, seal gaps around windows and pipes, and consider warmer-coloured outdoor bulbs, which attract fewer insects.
