Ant Trails in Kitchens Above and Behind the Parades
Black garden ants nest outdoors and come inside only to forage, and the back of a Harlesden parade gives them a short walk to a great deal of food. Garden ants thin out with every floor, so a trail that appears in a second or third-floor kitchen is worth a closer look. They may be climbing a warm pipe run or a cable riser inside the building rather than walking in at a door, which is why a trail can arrive at a sink with nothing at all visible outside. Flying Ant Days Over a Hard Yard
For a few close, humid afternoons each summer the colonies in a whole street release winged queens and males together. Over the hard surfaces behind the shops the effect can be startling, and an open window above means a share of them end up on the kitchen floor. They are not a separate pest and they will not start a nest indoors, but the crack they emerge from shows where a colony has been sitting all along. Tiny Pale Ants in a Heated Building
A quite different ant turns up in buildings that stay warm the year round, which includes flats over food premises: the Pharaoh ant, barely two millimetres long and pale yellowish-brown, faint enough on a worktop to be taken for dust moving. It nests indoors in wall voids, behind units and close to hot water and heating pipes, and it is not tied to the seasons the way a garden ant is.

A Pharaoh ant colony runs on many queens instead of one. Other flats in the same building
Because these ants travel along warm services, a trail in your kitchen may be one end of something shared with the flat next door or the unit below. Ask around the building and pass on whatever you learn when you call, as it changes what needs doing. Booking, and the Weeks Afterwards
- Say whether it is a flat or a house, which floor you are on, and what is at street level below you
- Describe the ants: black and several millimetres long, or tiny, pale and easy to miss
- Keep worktops clear and wipe them with warm soapy water, but leave the trail itself alone
- Mention any food business in the building, because premises are quoted per site rather than at a home price
