Fleas in Brent Homes and Rentals
Almost all household flea problems in London are the cat flea — which lives happily on dogs too. By the time bites are noticeable, most of the population is not on the animal at all but in the floor coverings.
The empty-property problem
Flea pupae can sit in their cocoons for weeks and hatch when they sense vibration and warmth. That is why a Brent flat that has stood empty between tenants, or a house where a pet has moved out, can seem fine on viewing and then produce a wave of biting fleas within days of someone moving in.
Signs of fleas
- Itchy bites, usually around ankles and lower legs
- Pets scratching, grooming or restless
- Tiny dark specks (flea dirt) in pet bedding or on carpet that turn reddish when damp
- Small dark insects jumping from carpet onto socks
Getting the property ready
Vacuum every floor thoroughly, including under furniture and along the edges, and empty the vacuum outside. Wash pet bedding on a hot cycle. Make sure any pets are treated by your vet at the same time, or they will simply bring the next generation back in.
Landlords and tenancies
For landlords and agents, flea treatment between tenancies avoids a complaint in the first week of a new let. Because it is priced per room, it is easy to agree in advance with a tenant or deduct against a deposit where appropriate.
