The flea life cycle in a house
An adult cat flea lays eggs on the pet, and they fall off wherever the animal sleeps or sits. Larvae hatch in carpets, rugs, sofas and under beds, spin cocoons, and wait. The pupae can stay dormant for weeks until warmth and vibration tell them a host is nearby.
Why it gets worse after a holiday
Come back from a week away and the house has been quiet and still. The moment the family walks in, dormant pupae hatch together, and a mild problem suddenly becomes bites on everyone's legs.
Getting ready for treatment
- Vacuum every carpeted room, under beds and along the edges, and empty the vacuum outside
- Wash pet bedding, throws and cushion covers on a hot wash
- Make sure every pet is treated by the vet at the same time
- Keep vacuuming after treatment — it helps the last pupae hatch
