Small cottage rooms
Cottage rooms are compact and often carpeted wall to wall, with heavy furniture pushed right against the walls. The carpet under a chest of drawers or a bed that never moves stays dark and untouched, and that is where larvae work. A narrow staircase with a wool runner and a box room used for storage are other likely spots.
Long-owned semis
In an interwar semi with one owner for many years, the dining room or front room may only be used on special occasions, and a wool carpet there can thin in patches before anyone notices. A grown-up child's bedroom, kept as it was, is much the same. Inherited or travel rugs laid over a fitted carpet give larvae two layers to feed in, and the underside of the rug is often in worse shape than the top.
Wardrobes, chests and lofts

Signs to Check
- Bare or thin patches at the carpet edge along the skirting, especially behind furniture
- Small cream larvae, or the silky tubes they live in, under rugs and at the edges
- Little buff moths that run or flutter weakly rather than fly off
- Holes in stored jumpers, blankets or felt
- Gritty debris and empty cases along the gripper when a carpet edge is lifted
Between them, the signs of carpet moths and what the larvae look like will usually settle whether it is moths. Bristly brown larvae rather than smooth cream ones suggest carpet beetles, and tiny insects that jump and bite are more likely fleas.
What to Do Before the Visit
- Move what furniture you can and vacuum right to the edges, including under beds and behind chests
- Empty the vacuum straight into an outside bin
- Bag any stored woollens you are unsure about and keep them sealed until after treatment
- Do not shampoo or steam the carpet beforehand
- Note which rooms show damage so you can list them when booking

Keeping Moths Out of Old Wool
Vacuum under furniture and along the edges every few weeks, turn or move rugs now and then, and air rooms that are rarely used. Store woollens clean, in sealed bags or boxes. In a room that stays shut for months, open the curtains and walk through now and then, because light and footsteps are what the larvae avoid.
