Why Moths Choose the Rooms You Rarely Use
Carpet moth larvae feed on wool and other animal fibres, and they avoid light and disturbance. A room in daily use is vacuumed and walked on, which breaks up eggs and larvae. A formal room that is shut for weeks at a time is left alone, and damage builds under sofas, beneath rugs and along the edges of the carpet. Drawing rooms and dining rooms
Large wool rugs, heavy furniture that is never moved and long curtains that reach the floor are typical of these rooms. Larvae work under a rug that has lain in the same place for years and along the carpet edge behind a sideboard. The first sign is often a bare patch found when furniture is moved for a party.
Guest bedrooms and dressing rooms

Rugs stored in the loft or garage
Rugs rolled up and taken to the loft or garage when a room is redecorated can carry larvae that keep feeding inside the roll, and when the rug comes back down it brings them with it. Unroll and check stored rugs before they return to a room, and look for carpet beetles as well, since they feed on the same wool. Signs to Look For
- Thin or bare patches at the edge of a carpet, under furniture or beneath a rug
- Small cream larvae or the silk cases they make
- Small buff moths that run or flutter rather than fly strongly
- Damage to the underside of a rug that looks fine from above
- Gritty debris along skirting boards in a room that is rarely used

How Many Rooms Is It?
In a big house the price depends on how many rooms are affected, not how many rooms the house has. Walk through every room with wool carpets or rugs before you book, lifting the corners of rugs and looking under large furniture. It is better to find the fourth room now than to treat three and have moths spread back. Halls, landings and stairs are not counted as rooms, although a wool stair runner is worth checking.
What to Do Before the Visit
- Vacuum thoroughly in the affected rooms, including under furniture and along edges, and empty the vacuum outside
- Lift rugs and check both sides
- Move small furniture so the carpet edges can be reached
- Wash or dry-clean affected blankets and clothes if the labels allow

Keeping Formal Rooms Moth-Free
