The adults you see are only part of a population. Egg cases wedged into cracks, and German females still carrying theirs, hold the next generation inside a tough protective shell. Young cockroaches go on emerging for a period after work begins, so clearing an infestation is a process over time rather than a single event.
What affects the timescale

- How much food, water and clutter the insects can find
- Whether neighbouring flats or businesses have cockroaches too
- Whether shop sprays have already pushed the insects into new places
- How easy it is to reach the places they are living, including behind appliances
A house with a small, recent problem is usually simpler than a block where cockroaches travel between flats, or a busy commercial kitchen, which is quoted per site.
