Some sightings are expected
Treatment deals with the cockroaches that are present, but a population contains insects at every stage of life, including eggs sealed inside their cases. Those eggs can hatch after the treatment has taken place, and insects that were deep in hiding may take a while to show themselves. For a time, seeing a few is part of the normal course of things.
Egg cases hatching
The hard case around cockroach eggs shields what is inside. A German female holds on to her case until the eggs are nearly ready, so a batch of tiny nymphs can appear not long after a visit. Oriental egg cases are left in cool, sheltered places and can take longer to hatch, so young ones may turn up later. Small nymphs, rather than full-size adults, often point to this.
Disturbed cockroaches out in the open
Cockroaches that have been affected, or whose hiding places have been disturbed, often behave out of character: wandering in daylight, moving sluggishly or lying on their backs on the floor. How long sightings go on
There is no fixed timescale; it depends on the species, the size of the infestation and the property. A small, recent problem normally settles sooner than a large German infestation that has spread through a kitchen's appliances. How long cockroach treatment takes goes through what affects it.
What you should notice over time
- Fewer cockroaches each time you do a night check
- Mostly small nymphs, then nothing
- No new droppings on surfaces you have wiped clean
- No fresh egg cases in cupboards
When it may be something else
Numbers that stay level or rise, healthy adults running for cover every night, or cockroaches reappearing after a clear spell all suggest a continuing source. Nymphs or a different insect?
Newly hatched cockroaches are only a few millimetres long and can be taken for beetles, spiders or other small insects. Look for long, fine antennae, a flattened shape and quick darting movement towards cover. What not to do
Hold off on shop sprays and foggers. They can scatter surviving cockroaches into walls and neighbouring homes, and they do not reach the egg cases. Do not deep-clean areas you were asked to leave, and do not push appliances back into place early if you were advised otherwise.
Keeping things on track
Carry on with the evening routine: food sealed, sink dry, bins emptied, pet bowls lifted. Housing association tenants, including those in Stonebridge, should keep their landlord informed.
