The Autumn Move Indoors
Mouse calls around here bunch up in the weeks after the clocks go back. Through the summer mice live perfectly comfortably in gardens, along fence lines and in the rough ground by the playing fields and the railway; once the nights turn and the seed heads are finished, a heated building a few metres away becomes the obvious alternative. The attached garage and the utility room
Most of these houses have a garage on the drive or along the flank wall, and many have a utility room in a lean-to or at the back of the kitchen. They are the coolest and least-used rooms in the building, and they hold precisely what a mouse is after: a sack of bird seed, dog biscuits, potatoes, cardboard, old bedding, a chest freezer with a warm motor behind it. An animal that gets that far has not reached your kitchen, but it is inside the building, and a connecting door or a pipe run through the wall is all that separates the two.
Behind the kickboards
A fitted kitchen has a continuous void behind and beneath the units, closed off at floor level by a clip-on plinth, and none of it is visible until that plinth comes away. The loft over a bedroom
In an interwar house the hatch is usually on the landing and the roof space runs unbroken above the bedrooms. Mice get up there alongside a soil pipe, up a cavity or in at the eaves, and once they are working through the insulation the noise carries straight down through a plasterboard ceiling into the room below. What to Look For, Room by Room
- Droppings the size of a grain of rice along the very front edge of the kitchen floor, at the plinth line
- Nibbled corners on a bird seed sack, a bag of dog biscuits or a sack of potatoes in the garage
- Shredded paper or fabric gathered at the back of a low drawer, a garage box or the airing cupboard
- A dark greasy mark at one end of a kickboard, where the same run is taken every night
- Droppings on top of the loft insulation near the hatch, or over a stored suitcase
- A musky smell in the utility room or a fitted cupboard that airing does not shift

What Helps Before Anyone Arrives
- Move everything edible in the garage and utility room into metal tins or rigid tubs, pet food and bird seed first
- Pull off the kickboards you can lift and clear the spills and crumbs behind the units
- Keep the connecting door between garage and house shut, and look at the gap along its bottom edge
- Leave holes open for the moment: sealing while mice are active shuts one inside a floor or a wall
