Look over anything upholstered or jointed while it is still outside on the drive, with the garage light on if you need it, rather than after it has gone up the stairs. Checking a Carpeted Bedroom Before You Call
Strip the bed in daylight and work outwards: mattress seams and piping first, then the frame joints and bolt holes, the back of the headboard where it meets the wall, the inside of divan storage drawers, and the gripper rod where the carpet meets the skirting. What Not to Do While You Wait
- Do not move a child into another bedroom or onto the front-room sofa — the bugs follow and a one-room problem becomes a two-room one
- Do not send duvets, pillows or soft toys to a grandparent's house to be washed
- Do not put the mattress out on the drive or into the garage, and do not buy a replacement yet: a mattress often stays
- Do not set off a shop-bought fogger in a bedroom, and leave the carpet down

Tell us which rooms have signs or bites, how many people sleep in each, and whether the home is a house or one of the flats above the parades. A bedroom counts, the box room counts if someone sleeps in it, and a front room counts when the sofa bed is in use; the landing between the bedrooms and the stairs down to the hall are not rooms and are never charged as one. Keeping Bed Bugs Out of a House With Visitors
- Check second-hand beds, sofas and chairs on the drive before they come through the front door, paying attention to seams, joints and screw holes
- Unpack suitcases on a hard floor or in the utility room after a trip, never on a bed, and wash what the fabric allows on a hot cycle
- Strip and check a guest bed or sofa bed in the same week the visitors leave, not months later
- Ask, kindly, if a child comes home from a sleepover with bites — it is easier to sort out one bedroom than four
