The small, pale brown ones with two dark stripes stay where it is warm all year: the gap behind the fridge, the space under a built-in oven, the housing of a dishwasher, the airing cupboard. They are the species that does well in a flat over a shop. The big, very dark, slow ones want damp more than heat, so in a Sudbury house they turn up at the cold end — the utility room, a gully or floor drain in an attached garage, the manhole by the back door, the base of an outside wall. What to Check Tonight, and What to Do First
- Go into the kitchen after dark and put the light on, watching the kickboards, the gap beside the cooker and the cupboard under the sink
- Look for droppings like coarse ground pepper on the worktop edge and inside cupboards
- Check for small brown egg cases wedged behind appliances and in cupboard corners
- Notice any stale, oily smell in a cupboard that is never opened

- Put food, including pet food, into sealed containers and leave nothing out overnight
- Dry the sink and fix a dripping tap — water keeps them going when food does not
- Keep the kitchen bin closed and take bags out to the wheelie bin rather than leaving them by the back door
- Leave shop sprays and foggers alone; they scatter cockroaches deeper into the building
- Tell your landlord, managing agent or the business below if you are in a flat over a parade
Booking and What Happens Around a Visit
When you book, say whether it is a house, a flat above a shop or a flat in a block, where you have seen them, and at what time of day. Empty the cupboard under the sink and the one beside the cooker so those spaces can be reached, and mention any second-hand appliance that arrived recently.
