How to Deal With a Cockroach Infestation in Brent

How you deal with cockroaches in Brent depends on where you find them: your own kitchen, a flat in a large block, or a shop or food business. The first steps are the same; after that the routes divide.

Cockroach Control Brent: £190 flat / £240 house

The same insect, three different problems

A cockroach in a house kitchen, one in a tenth-floor flat and one behind a takeaway counter may be the same species, but the fix is not the same. In a house you control most of the building. In a block you control one flat of many. In a business you have legal duties as well as a pest. Work out which applies before deciding what to do next.

Whichever it is, the order is the same: confirm the insect, identify the species, find where they are living, tell whoever else needs to know, and only then arrange treatment. Skipping ahead, usually by spraying, makes each later step harder.

Confirm what you are seeing

Cockroaches hide by day, so evidence often comes before the insects: droppings like ground pepper, brown egg cases, shed skins and a musty smell. The signs of a cockroach infestation explains each. Check the corners of cupboards, the hinges of doors and the back of the cooker. A quick look with a torch after dark tells you a lot, and why cockroaches appear at night explains how to read what you find.

Which species?

Small, light brown cockroaches with two dark stripes behind the head are German cockroaches, and they live around warm appliances. Larger, very dark ones are Oriental cockroaches, which prefer cooler, damper spots at ground level. German vs Oriental cockroaches sets out why the difference matters. A clear photo helps if you are not sure. Young cockroaches of both kinds are smaller and wingless, so do not judge the species on size alone.

In your own kitchen

Cockroach on a kitchen wall

Search the warm, tight spaces: behind the fridge, under the sink, around the boiler, inside the plinths below the units. Where cockroaches hide in kitchens takes you round them one at a time. Finding cockroaches says nothing about how clean you are, a point covered in do cockroaches mean a property is dirty. In a house, a leaking pipe under the sink or a damp cellar can matter as much as the kitchen itself, so fix drips and dry out damp cupboards.

In a block of flats

Cockroach on a tiled floor

Large developments like those in Wembley carry heating pipes and cables between floors in shared risers, and cockroaches travel along them. If you rent from a housing association, report sightings to your landlord first, as the Stonebridge page describes. Leaseholders should tell the managing agent, who is normally responsible for the communal areas and the bin stores. Can cockroaches spread between flats explains why neighbours need to be part of the plan. Mice use the same routes, which the mice overview touches on.

Above or beside a food business

A flat over a restaurant or takeaway shares warmth, drains and sometimes a rear yard with the kitchen below. That is the everyday situation in Harlesden, where so many flats sit above shops. If cockroaches seem to come up from downstairs, tell your landlord, and the business if you can; treating the flat alone may not hold. Keep your own bins sealed and your drains and sink traps topped up with water, because a dry trap in an unused sink gives cockroaches a quiet route up from below.

If you run the business

Food hygiene law requires food businesses to have adequate procedures for controlling pests, and environmental health officers can take action where they find signs of cockroaches. Record what you see and where, keep deliveries off the floor and check boxes as they arrive. For premises such as the food production and trade units in Park Royal, we quote per site after talking the building through. Tell us the type of business, the size of the premises and where the sightings have been, and whether a customer or inspector has raised them.

Keep a simple record

Write down the date, the room and roughly how many you saw, and take a photo when you can. It takes a minute and helps in every setting: a landlord or managing agent can see the problem is real, a business has evidence of the action it took, and whoever treats the property knows where to concentrate.

What to avoid while you wait

Cockroach in a cupboard under a sink
  • Spraying at cockroaches you can see, which scatters the rest into walls and next door
  • Moving boxes, appliances or furniture from an affected kitchen into clean rooms
  • Leaving pet food, dirty dishes or standing water out overnight
  • Bringing in second-hand appliances without checking them; see how cockroaches get into properties

After the visit

Some sightings afterwards are normal, and timescales depend on the species, the building and whether cockroaches can keep arriving; how long cockroach treatment takes explains why. Seeing cockroaches after treatment says what to expect and when to call. Once they have gone, preventing cockroaches from returning covers water, food, shelter and gaps.

Booking cockroach control in Brent

Cockroach control in Brent is £190 for a flat and £240 for a house, with business premises quoted separately; see the Brent cockroach control page.
