The same insect, three different problems
A cockroach in a house kitchen, one in a tenth-floor flat and one behind a takeaway counter may be the same species, but the fix is not the same. In a house you control most of the building. In a block you control one flat of many. In a business you have legal duties as well as a pest. Work out which applies before deciding what to do next.
Whichever it is, the order is the same: confirm the insect, identify the species, find where they are living, tell whoever else needs to know, and only then arrange treatment. Skipping ahead, usually by spraying, makes each later step harder.
Confirm what you are seeing
Cockroaches hide by day, so evidence often comes before the insects: droppings like ground pepper, brown egg cases, shed skins and a musty smell. The signs of a cockroach infestation explains each. Which species?
Small, light brown cockroaches with two dark stripes behind the head are German cockroaches, and they live around warm appliances. Larger, very dark ones are Oriental cockroaches, which prefer cooler, damper spots at ground level. German vs Oriental cockroaches sets out why the difference matters. A clear photo helps if you are not sure. Young cockroaches of both kinds are smaller and wingless, so do not judge the species on size alone.
In your own kitchen
Search the warm, tight spaces: behind the fridge, under the sink, around the boiler, inside the plinths below the units. Where cockroaches hide in kitchens takes you round them one at a time.
