Why moths return
Clothes moths are common in homes and can arrive in many ways: flying in from a neighbouring property, hidden in a second-hand rug or coat, or breeding in an old bird's nest in the roof. A home that goes back to wool left undisturbed for months simply gives newcomers the same opportunity as before. Some survive in a part of the house nobody mentioned, such as a loft or a cupboard of old coats.
Vacuum where it is dark, not just where it is dirty
The floor you walk on every day is not the priority. Once a week or so, run the vacuum under beds and sofas, along skirting boards, into the corners of wardrobes and around the edges of rugs. Rooms that are used rarely need the same attention. Empty the vacuum promptly afterwards, as anything it has picked up can survive inside. Store woollens clean and sealed
- Wash or dry-clean jumpers, coats and scarves before putting them away for the season
- Store them in sealed plastic bags or airtight boxes rather than cardboard or open shelves
- Take out stored knitwear every so often, shake it outdoors and look it over
- Keep blankets and spare bedding in closed containers too
Air, turn and move rugs
Turn rugs round now and then so the same section is not always under a sofa, vacuum the underside, and take them outside to air on a dry day. Rugs rolled up for storage should be cleaned first, wrapped and checked from time to time. Houses with a lot of wool, such as the larger period homes of Dollis Hill, benefit most from this routine. A good shake outdoors also dislodges eggs and young larvae.
Check second-hand rugs, furniture and vintage clothes
Before bringing in a vintage rug, an upholstered chair or a bag of pre-loved knitwear, look at the undersides, seams and folds for silk, cases and frass. Birds' nests and forgotten storage
An old nest in a loft, a disused chimney or the eaves can keep moths and carpet beetles going for years. So can a forgotten box of fabric. Cedar, lavender and other deterrents
Cedar blocks and lavender bags are pleasant, but there is little good evidence that they protect textiles from an active infestation. Think of them as a small extra alongside cleaning and sealed storage, never as a replacement for either.
Keep a trap as an early warning
A pheromone trap left in a wardrobe or a room with good rugs will catch male moths if they reappear. Checking it every few weeks gives early notice, well before damage shows. On its own it will not stop breeding, because females are not caught. Put it in the room you most want to protect.
If signs return
Compare what you are seeing with the signs of carpet moths, then get the affected rooms dealt with while the problem is small; one rug or one wardrobe is far simpler to deal with than a spread through the house.
