What Are the Signs of Mice in Your Home?

Mice are small, quiet and mostly nocturnal, so the evidence usually turns up before the animal does. These are the signs to look for — and when to book mouse control.

Why mouse signs build up so quickly

A house mouse nibbles at food many times a night and leaves a trail of droppings wherever it goes — dozens in a single night. Mice also breed fast: a female can have her first litter within a couple of months of being born. A handful of droppings this week can mean a colony by next month.

Droppings like grains of rice

Mouse droppings are around 3–6mm long, dark, and pointed at one or both ends. Unlike rat droppings, which appear in small clusters, mouse droppings are scattered widely along skirting boards, inside drawers and cupboards, on worktops and behind appliances. If yours are larger and blunt-ended, compare them with rats or mice.

Nibbled food and packaging

  • Small, neat holes in cereal boxes, rice, pasta and flour bags
  • Chewed corners on biscuit and crisp packets
  • Pet food disappearing from bowls overnight
  • Seeds or crumbs gathered in a hidden corner

Sounds after dark

Light scratching and pattering in walls, ceilings or under floorboards, often starting as the house goes quiet in the evening. The sound is quicker and lighter than rats. If it comes from above, see can mice get into a loft.

Smell and marks

A stale, musky smell, strongest in enclosed spaces such as under the sink or behind the cooker, builds up as a colony grows. Mice also leave faint greasy smears along the routes they use, and in long-standing infestations, small pillars of grease, dirt and urine can form at favourite spots.

Nesting material

Shredded paper, fabric, insulation or cardboard pulled into a tight ball is a nest. Look inside kitchen plinths, the backs of drawers, airing cupboards and storage boxes — more places are covered in where mice nest.

Pets that suddenly take an interest

Cats and dogs often notice mice first. A pet staring at a kitchen unit, pawing at a skirting board or sniffing along the bottom of a wall is worth taking seriously.

What to do next

Put food into sealed containers, clean up droppings wearing gloves, and do not block holes yet — the order matters. Then get it treated: mouse control in Brent is £190 for a flat and £240 for a house. Wondering where they came from? Read how mice are getting in.
