The Rooms Spiders Actually Settle In
A spider stays where the food comes to it and the web is left alone, which rules out most of a busy house and rules in the places where things are stored and the door stays shut for weeks. Insects walk in under a garage door, gather at conservatory glass after dark and drift into a shed through the gap round the frame, while the roof timbers, shelf brackets and stacked boxes inside offer every anchor point a web needs. Dusty sheets of webbing between rafters, and heavy webbing behind things nobody has moved in a year, mark a resident population rather than one wanderer. The garage off the front drive
Most of these houses have a garage at the side or across the front drive, and most of those garages hold bikes, tools, paint tins and boxes rather than a car. The result is a cool, dim, still room with a wide gap under an up-and-over door. Webbing builds along the roof line and behind whatever has not been shifted for a season. Where there is an internal door through to the hall or utility room, spiders use it, and that is how a garage problem becomes an indoor one.
Sheds, garden offices and the conservatory
At the far end of the garden a shed or garden office backs straight onto planting and hedge, so insect traffic is constant. A garden office in daily use is worse rather than better: a screen and a light burning into the evening pull moths and midges to the glass, and the spiders follow the food. A conservatory does the same thing on the house itself, with warmth, light and insects at the glass all night and web corners up in the roof that nobody reaches without a ladder.
Stored boxes and eaves cupboards
Indoors the same conditions exist in the low eaves cupboards behind the knee walls of a converted loft, in a box room stacked to the ceiling, and in the cupboard under the stairs. Cardboard and old fabric suit spiders and suit the small insects they feed on even better. From the end of August the large male house spiders leave the webs they have spent the year in and go looking for a female, which is why one crosses the carpet at night or ends up in the bath. Nothing has moved in and nothing is breeding behind the skirting; they are passing through, and a handful over a few weeks is ordinary in a home with a garage, a shed and a long garden. False Widows Around Frames and Sills
The noble false widow is glossy and dark, with a bulbous body and pale markings, and the places it favours are the corner of a window frame, the underside of a sill, the porch light and the inside of a shed. It is not regarded as dangerous and being bitten by one is an unusual event; a bite is generally likened to a wasp sting. What Treatment Will and Will Not Do
The straight answer is that it brings numbers down in the rooms and outbuildings it is applied to, and holds them down for a period. It does not seal a garage, it will not stop a spider walking in from a garden full of insects, and it changes nothing about the reason they came. Where a steady spider population is being fed by another problem in the building, that has to be sorted out as well. Before the visit
- List the rooms and outbuildings where webbing keeps returning, and say which of them are inside the house
- Say whether the garage has an internal door through to the house, and whether the garden office has power and is used
- Pull boxes and stored things a hand's width off the walls so the corners can actually be reached
- Photograph anything you think is a false widow from well back rather than moving it
- Clear a path round the inside of a shed or garage so the far corners are not blocked
Holding the Numbers Down Between Visits

- Run a brush over the garage roof line, the shed corners and the conservatory frame every few weeks, taking egg sacs as well as webs
- Fit a brush strip along the bottom of an up-and-over garage door and seal the gap round the frame of a side door
- Turn the garden office and porch lights off when nothing is happening out there, or fit warmer-coloured bulbs that draw fewer insects
- Draw blinds after dark so indoor light does not spill onto conservatory glass and patio doors
- Move stored things out of open cardboard into lidded crates, and stand them clear of the wall
- Cut back the shrubs and climbers that touch window frames, the shed and the garage wall
