How Fleas Reach a Kingsbury Family Home

Dog scratching on a living-room carpet

The flea found in homes is nearly always the cat flea, and it lives just as well on dogs. A pet that spends time in the garden can pick up fleas where other animals have rested, then carry them indoors to its favourite chair, bed or rug. Eggs laid on the animal drop off wherever it settles, and the young stages develop in carpets and furnishings rather than on the pet.

Visiting cats and foxes in long gardens

Long back gardens that meet other gardens make an easy route for neighbours' cats, and foxes often lie up under sheds and decking. Both can carry fleas. A cat that sleeps in your shed or a fox beneath the decking can leave flea eggs and larvae in those spots, and your own pet can collect fleas there. A home without pets can be affected too, if a visiting cat gets in through a cat flap or an open back door.

Carpets, rugs and knocked-through rooms

Carpeted bedrooms, stair carpets and thick rugs give flea larvae the dark, sheltered fibres they need, and they move away from light towards skirting boards and under furniture, where a vacuum seldom reaches. Where the front and back reception rooms have been knocked through into one long room, the pet's resting spots may be at either end. Where fleas hide around the home covers the less obvious places, including beds and sofas.

Bitten After Buying a House From Pet Owners

When you buy from a family who kept cats or dogs, the carpets can hold flea pupae even if the house looked spotless. If it then stands empty while the sale completes or while a new kitchen or loft conversion goes in, those pupae simply wait. Moving in brings footsteps and warmth, and the fleas start hatching, often around the ankles of whoever is unpacking. If you are still buying, it is worth asking whether the sellers had pets and whether the carpets are staying. Flea problems after moving into a new home goes through what to do.

Getting a Kingsbury Home Ready for Flea Treatment

Flea on carpet fibres
  • Speak to your vet about treating every cat and dog in the home at the same time, including cats that are mostly outdoors
  • Vacuum carpets, rugs, stairs and sofas, getting into the edges and under beds, then empty the vacuum into an outside bin
  • Put pet bedding and throws through a hot wash
  • Clear toys, shoes and stored things off the floors so the carpet can be reached
  • Count the affected rooms before you book, leaving out halls, landings and stairs

Preparing a property for flea treatment has the full list, and our Brent flea advice covers the wider picture.

After the visit

Keep vacuuming regularly afterwards, because fleas still in their cocoons can go on hatching for a while and vibration helps bring them out. How long that lasts varies with the home and how established the fleas were. If bites are not easing, or you keep finding live fleas, get back in touch. Why fleas can still bite after treatment explains why.

Stopping Fleas Coming Back

Most of this is about the animals, inside and out. For flea treatment elsewhere in the borough, see Flea Control Brent.

  • Keep every pet's flea protection up to date, following your vet's advice
  • Wash pet bedding often and vacuum the places pets like to sleep
  • Keep shed doors shut, and once you are sure no animal is underneath, close gaps under decking where foxes or cats lie up
  • Fit a microchip cat flap if neighbours' cats are coming in
  • Ask your vet to check a new or rescue pet before it settles on the carpets

FAQs

Flea Control Kingsbury FAQs

We have no cat, but a neighbour's cat sleeps in our shed. Can that give us fleas?

It can. Fleas drop off where an animal rests, so a shed, porch or spot under the hedge can hold eggs and larvae, and a person or dog can carry fleas indoors from there. Keep the shed shut, and if there are bites in the house, book a flea treatment for the rooms affected.

Could the foxes in our garden be the source?

Foxes can carry fleas, and a den under decking or a shed puts them close to the house. A household pet is the more usual route, but if you have no pets and a fox lives under the decking, mention it when you book.

We have just bought a house from pet owners and we are being bitten. What now?

Vacuum all the carpets thoroughly, keep doing it every day, and note which rooms the bites happen in. Rooms are priced at £180 for the first and £60 for each additional one. Can you have fleas without pets? explains why this happens.

Our cat has been treated by the vet. Why are we still seeing fleas?

The vet's product deals with fleas on the cat, while eggs and larvae already in the carpets carry on developing, so the rooms need attention too. Do pet flea treatments clear the house? covers this.

Do the stairs and landing count as rooms?

No. Halls, landings and stairs are not counted as rooms, so fleas in two bedrooms and the lounge come to £300. Tell us which rooms are affected when you book.

How do I know it is fleas and not something else?

Flea bites are usually round the ankles and lower legs, and you may see tiny dark insects jumping or specks of flea dirt in pet bedding. Bites on the arms, neck or shoulders that appear overnight can point to bed bugs, and itchy skin with small hairy larvae along carpet edges can be carpet beetles. If bites become infected or you are worried, speak to a pharmacist or GP.

Where can I check the signs of fleas properly?

How to know if you have fleas in your home goes through them. Pet bedding, the rug by the back door and the carpet beside a favourite chair are good places to start looking.
