Getting the Rooms Ready
- Ask your vet about treating every cat and dog in the household at the same time, including one that is mostly outdoors
- Run the vacuum slowly along the skirtings, under beds and round the edge of every rug, then empty it straight into an outside bin
- Put pet bedding, throws and floor cushions through a hot wash if the labels allow
- Lift toys, shoes and storage boxes off the floors so that the whole carpet can be reached
- Count the rooms where bites happen or a pet sleeps, leaving the hall, stairs and landing out of that count

Keep vacuuming daily for a while, because cocoons open over a period rather than all together and vibration is what brings them out. When the Bites Are Something Else
Bites clustered round the ankles and lower legs, with something small that jumps off a sock, fit fleas. Bites appearing overnight on the arms, neck and shoulders are worth checking against bed bugs, which travel between homes on furniture and belongings. Itchy skin with no clear bite marks, together with small bristly larvae at the edge of a carpet, points instead to carpet beetles.
