The House That Never Had Them Until Something Arrived
A semi with a garden and a drive has none of the advantages above, so when cockroaches appear in one the question is what came in recently. Deliveries are the usual answer: cardboard boxes that sat in a warm warehouse or storeroom, catering-sized packs of food, a crate of stock for someone working from home. The corrugations of a box are exactly the space a cockroach wants, and a box brought in and stacked in a warm kitchen or an integral garage gives it days to move out quietly. Break boxes down and get them out of the house rather than storing them flat behind a door.
Appliances Bought Second-Hand or Reconditioned
The other import is an appliance. A fridge, a washing machine, a microwave or a coffee machine taken from another kitchen carries its own warm cavities with it, and the insects inside are not disturbed by the journey. Oriental Cockroaches Low Down and Damp
The second species behaves nothing like the first. Oriental cockroaches are bigger, very dark and glossy, slow, and poor climbers on smooth surfaces, and they want cool and damp rather than warm and dry: a gully at the back door, the floor of an unheated garage, the space under the floor of a rear extension, a shed or a coal store. Finding one on the kitchen floor at night in a house like this usually means it walked in from outside at ground level, not that a population is living in the units. What to Check Tonight, and What Not to Reach For
Go into the kitchen after dark, put the light on and stand still for a moment. Insects moving fast for cover at that moment is the clearest evidence there is. Then look for droppings like coarse ground pepper on the worktop behind appliances and along the top of the kickboard, brown purse-shaped egg cases in corners, and in a heavier case a flat, oily smell in the room. Say which it is, what you have seen and where, and whether anything - a delivery, an appliance, a house move - arrived shortly before.
