Start by Deciding What You Actually Saw
More calls about cockroaches in suburban streets turn out to be something else than turn out to be cockroaches, and it is worth a minute of looking before anybody books anything. A cockroach is flattened from top to bottom, has antennae as long as its body, and runs for the nearest dark gap the instant a light comes on. Beetles that wander in from a drive, a garage or a garden on a warm night are hard-shelled, shorter in the antenna and much less frantic about being seen.
The Two Species, and Why the Difference Matters
The German cockroach is small, about a centimetre and a half, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. It lives indoors, keeps close to warmth, breeds quickly and belongs to fitted kitchens and airing cupboards. The Oriental cockroach is bigger, darker and slower, and prefers cool damp places such as a gully, a garage drain, a cellar step or the underside of a sink. Which one you have decides where the search goes, and this comparison separates them.
Looking at Night
Cockroaches spend the day jammed into a warm slot and do their moving in the dark, so an evening glance tells you little. How One Reaches a House Like This
German cockroaches do not stroll across a lawn and let themselves in at the back door; they are carried. A second-hand fridge, cooker or microwave with a warm motor housing is the classic vehicle, and so are boxes brought home from a workplace, a delivery of cardboard left in a warm garage, luggage from a trip and belongings moved out of a flat that had them. The Flats Above the Parade
The small parade near Preston Road station has flats over it, and a flat sitting on top of a trading unit is in a different situation from the houses in the streets behind. Warmth rises, water runs through boxed pipework, and the holes cut for pipes, cables and extraction join one part of the building to the next, so a flat can pick up cockroaches from below or alongside without anything ever being carried in. What Helps Before a Visit
- Write down what you saw, how big it was, what time it was and which gap it ran into
- Empty the cupboard under the sink and the one beside the cooker so the backs can be reached
- Wipe the sink and shower tray dry last thing and mend a dripping tap, since water holds them as firmly as food
- Put cereal, rice, flour and pet food into sealed boxes, and take the crumbs off the worktops overnight
- Leave sprays and foggers alone, as they scatter cockroaches deeper into the fabric of the building
Booking a House, a Flat or Premises
Say which it is - a semi, a flat over the parade, a flat in a block or trading premises - and where the sightings have been. Food premises are quoted per site rather than at the flat or house price, because the kitchen, the storage and the trading hours differ in every unit, and anyone running a food business has a legal duty to keep pests out of the places where food is prepared and stored, so a single sighting has to be acted on.
