Warm Units, Canteens and Food Premises
A unit that keeps ovens, dishwashers, chillers or machinery running is warm, slightly damp in places and full of gaps behind fixed equipment, which is everything this species wants. Staff kitchens and canteens in otherwise ordinary warehousing count too, because the heat and the crumbs are in the same corner of the building. Anywhere food is handled there is a legal duty to keep pests out of the areas where it is prepared and stored, so one insect on a floor is worth acting on that week rather than watching for a second.

They Travel in Goods, Not Just in Buildings
This is the part people miss in a street of semis. Cockroaches and their egg cases ride in cardboard, in crates and pallets, in the packaging around a second-hand appliance and in bags that go back and forth between a warm workplace and a house. Where there are flats above trading premises, the floor between them is not the barrier it looks. Service pipes, an old flue, a boxed soil stack and the holes cut for them all pass upward, and warmth does the same, which makes the rooms over a kitchen that runs late more attractive than the ones at the front of a cold house. Oriental Cockroaches at the Bottom of an Older House
The other species turns up in a different part of a property altogether. Oriental cockroaches are larger, very dark and shiny, poor climbers, and they want cool damp rather than heat, which puts them around drains and gullies: the inspection chamber in a back garden or side alley, the gully the kitchen waste pipe runs into, an unheated garage with a floor drain, the void under a suspended ground floor. Because they climb badly they mostly stay low in a building, so finding them by a back door and nowhere upstairs fits the pattern rather than contradicting it.
Telling the two species apart is worth doing early, because it changes where anyone should be looking, and why they appear at night explains the value of a late torch check. Small insects marching in an orderly line across a worktop in daylight are almost certainly ants instead.
What Helps Before We Come, and What Does Not
- Go into the kitchen after dark, switch the light on and note what runs where: behind the cooker, under the sink, into the boiler cupboard
- Empty the cupboard under the sink and the one beside the cooker so those spaces can be reached
- Break down delivery boxes the day they arrive instead of stacking them in the garage or under the stairs
- Sort out a dripping trap or a wet cupboard floor, because damp keeps them going in a spotless kitchen
- Leave shop sprays and foggers on the shelf: they push insects further into boxing and voids without touching the egg cases
