The garage and the connecting door
Nearly every one of these houses has a garage at the side, reached from the front drive, and most of them long ago stopped holding a car. What they hold instead is bulk pet food, a sack of bird seed, garden bulbs, sports kit, cardboard and boxes of things nobody has sorted through. The loft and the space behind the eaves
Above the bedrooms is a loft used for suitcases, boxed clothes, decorations and spare bedding, all of it warm and undisturbed. Is This New, or Has It Been Going On?
It is worth asking before you do anything, because the answer changes how much of the house needs looking at, even though it does not change the price.
- Fresh droppings look dark and slightly moist; older ones dry out, turn grey and crumble when they are moved
- A dark greasy line along the edge of a kickboard or over a joist builds up slowly, so it suggests a route in regular use rather than something that started last week
- Gnawing on bare timber is pale and sharp-edged when it is new and darkens as it weathers
- Nesting material packed into a drawer, a boot or a cardboard box points at a settled population rather than a visitor passing through
- Droppings in several rooms, or on more than one floor, say much the same thing

Worth Doing Before Anyone Arrives
- Move cereal, rice, flour and pet food into tins or rigid tubs with a firm lid, rather than clips and bag ties
- Unclip the kickboards you can lift and clear out whatever has collected behind and under the units
- Take everything edible in the garage off the floor, bird seed and bulbs included, and put it in sealed containers

When you book
