Why Long-Owned Kingsbury Homes Suit Carpet Moths
Moth larvae feed on wool, silk, feathers and fur, and they choose places that stay dark and undisturbed. A house lived in by one family for several decades tends to have plenty of those: a good wool carpet in a bay-windowed front room kept for best, heavy furniture that has not moved in years, and a spare bedroom saved for visitors. Bedrooms left as they were after grown-up children moved out are just as quiet.
Lofts, Loft Conversions and Stored Textiles
Kingsbury's hipped roofs give a sizeable loft, and many have been converted into a bedroom with eaves storage behind small doors. Those eaves cupboards are where wool blankets, old coats and boxes of knitted jumpers end up, and where larvae can feed unseen for a long time. Clear-Outs When Downsizing
Moths often come to light when a family clears a house to sell it or to move somewhere smaller. Lifting a rug that has been down for twenty years, emptying a wardrobe or bringing boxes down from the loft can reveal damage and larvae all at once. It is also the moment infested items get carried into a new home, so check anything woollen before it is packed.
Checking Carpets and Rugs Before You Book
Pull furniture away from the skirting and look at the carpet edges, especially behind sofas, under beds and inside built-in wardrobes. Thin or bald patches, loose tufts, silky tubes of webbing and small cream larvae all point to moths; the signs guide and what the larvae look like help you confirm it. Short, bristly brown larvae and empty skins suggest carpet beetles instead.
What to Do Now
- Vacuum the affected rooms right to the edges and under anything you can move, then empty the cleaner into an outside bin
- Seal stored woollens from the loft or eaves in bags up there rather than carrying them loose through the house
- Wash or dry-clean what can be cleaned and set aside anything too damaged to keep
- Do not throw out a valuable or inherited rug in a hurry; ask a specialist rug cleaner about it first
