Where Ants Nest in the Estate's Paving and Planting
Garden ants want ground that is loose, well drained and warmed by the sun, and the sand bed under block paving describes that almost exactly. Look along the edge restraint of a path or a parking bay, at joints where the blocks have lost their sand, and at the strip where paving finishes against the wall of the building. Beds of shrubs and bark mulch run right up to the walls in places, and a bed on a sunny elevation stays warm and dry a little way down. A colony sitting in one is inches from the building, so its workers have next to no distance to cover before they reach a door or an air brick. Where the planting is communal it is maintained under contract, so lifting blocks or digging into a bed is not a resident's job; note where the ants surface and pass that on when you report it.
Patio Doors, Thresholds and Ground-Floor Flats
Newer homes are built with low weathered thresholds at patio and back doors so that there is no step to trip over, and the trade-off is a shallow detail with a drainage channel and a track that ants walk along without any trouble. In a ground-floor flat whose doors open onto a courtyard, the kitchen may be only a few strides from the planting outside. Follow the trail to the point where it leaves the room, then look at the same spot from outside; the two ends nearly always line up. Garden ants thin out sharply with height, so a flat on the first or second floor of a low-rise block sees far fewer of them than the one below it. Flying Ant Days Over the Courtyards
On a handful of close, humid afternoons in July and August every colony in the area sends up winged queens and males together, and over paving and mown grass the effect is hard to miss. They will not start a nest indoors and the flight is over within hours, so on its own it is not a reason to book anything. What it does tell you is precisely which crack, kerb joint or bed the colony has been living under all year, which is worth remembering. - Brush kiln-dried sand back into the joints of your own paving each spring
- Keep the drainage channel and track of a patio door clear of crumbs, soil and grit
- Seal around waste pipes where they pass out through the kitchen wall
- Store sugar, cereal, rice and pet food in rigid containers rather than opened packets
