What a Queen Wasp Finds on a Newer Stonebridge Roof
A queen coming out of hibernation in spring wants a dry cavity she can reach through a small opening, with weathered timber somewhere nearby to chew into paper. Newer construction gives her fewer choices than a hundred-year-old roof, but it does not give her none. Eaves are ventilated on purpose, so a continuous line of slots or round vents runs along the soffit with a dry roof space behind it, and the insect mesh behind those vents is easy to dislodge or missing in a patch. Soffit vents and roof boxes
Where the roof turns a corner, runs out over a porch or steps up between one house and the next, the boxing that closes the underside is a small dry void of its own. Watch that underside rather than the tiles. A nest announces itself as a steady two-way line going into a single slot, always the same one, whereas wasps drifting along the whole eaves are generally just passing. Porches, balcony recesses and garden sheds
Lower down, the sheltered spots are the canopy over a front door, the recess of a walkway or balcony on a low-rise block, and the small gardens behind the houses. A shed roof, a stack of garden chairs left under a cover and a thick shrub growing against a fence all suit a nest that only has to stay dry.
Ground Nests in Communal Grass and Planting
Not every nest is up high. Wasps will take over a hole in the ground — a gap at the edge of a communal lawn, a void beneath an edging kerb, bark-mulched planting, the strip where paving meets grass — and the first sign is a stream of wasps rising out of turf that looks perfectly ordinary. A ground nest is the same £90 fixed price as one on the building. Two other things get mistaken for it. Winged insects boiling out of a crack in a path for an hour on one muggy afternoon are flying ants and will have finished by evening. Something heavy shifting about in the roof at first light, beside a soffit vent that keeps getting wider, is more likely a squirrel. The signs of an active nest set out the difference.
Who Arranges It, and Getting to the Nest
If the opening is on your own house, porch or garden, you can book it straight away. If the wasps are going in over a communal entrance, along a shared roof edge, above a bin store or somewhere out in the landscaping, tell your landlord or the managing agent as well, because that part of the estate is theirs and they hold the keys to it; how responsibility is usually divided here is set out on Pest Control Stonebridge.
What to tell us when you book
- Which opening the wasps use: a soffit vent, a roof box, a porch canopy, a shed or a hole in the ground
- Roughly how high it is, and whether you can see it from one of your own windows
- Whether somebody has to unlock a courtyard, a side gate or a store for us to reach it
- Whether anyone in the home has reacted badly to a sting before

The Days After the Nest Is Treated

Making the Same Opening Less Inviting Next Spring

- Once the nest is dead, ask for the mesh behind the soffit vents to be made good, and report a damaged roof box or a lifted verge to whoever repairs the building
- From April, glance along the eaves line, inside the shed and under the porch for a small papery ball about the size of a golf ball
- Keep the shed shut, and look through stacked furniture and covers before the summer starts
- Rinse cans and bottles before they go outside, and pull bin store doors closed behind you
- Cut back a shrub or climber that has grown up against the wall or the porch canopy
