The little mottled beetle walking about on a sunny windowsill eats nothing indoors at all; it is trying to get out to the flowers. Its larvae are the reason to do anything - bristly brown grubs a few millimetres long that live on wool, fur, feathers, dead insects and the fluff that gathers where nobody cleans.
The job is priced room by room, so work out where the larvae are before you book carpet beetle treatment, or call 0800 955 2347 and we will help you narrow it down.

Alongside the main tiled roof with its deep overhanging eaves, a house of this age carries several small ones: the little tiled roof over the bay window, the canopy above the front door, and the junction where a garage or a rear extension meets the wall. Each is a sheltered ledge with a gap at the back of it, and each is a place a bird can nest within a metre or two of a bedroom window. A nest is a store of feathers, down and dead insects, which is as close to a perfect nursery as carpet beetle larvae are ever offered. The identification guide covers what confirms them indoors.
While a nest is occupied it is being fed and cleaned out; once the young have flown it cools, the food supply stops and the larvae living in the lining go looking elsewhere. Walking is all they need to do - in under a tile or a soffit board, along a wall plate, down beside a bay roof into the void behind the front bedroom's floor, or through a loft and out at the hatch or a ceiling light. The first larvae usually turn up in a front or back bedroom rather than downstairs.
The law protects a wild bird's nest while it is being built or in use, so nothing is touched until the birds have finished with it. After that the old material and the debris beneath it can be cleared and the gap closed, which is work for a roofer or a gutter contractor rather than for us, and it makes a real difference to how many larvae reach the rooms below the following year. Do not lean out of a bedroom window or go up a ladder to reach a bay or porch roof yourself.

Indoors the larvae want the same thing the nest gave them: material nobody disturbs. The void behind a kitchen kickboard, the gap under a fridge, the strip of carpet behind a wardrobe, the floor of an airing cupboard, and the dead flies that collect in a window channel, a porch or a light fitting all count as food. This guide works through the places worth checking, and the larvae guide shows the bristly shape and the shed skins, which are often easier to find than the larvae themselves.
Adults hatch indoors and head for daylight, so several small mottled beetles walking about on an upstairs sill is how many households first notice anything. They are on their way out rather than in, which means something has been breeding in the house over the winter; the Pest Control Preston page puts that alongside the other things the year brings. The windowsill guide explains the pattern, and the damage guide shows what they leave in wool - scattered holes rather than the grazed, thinning patches carpet moths in Preston produce.

The hairs on the larvae irritate some people's skin, which is why an itchy rash can appear in a house with nothing biting in it at all. They neither bite nor live on people. If you have a rash or other symptoms, speak to a pharmacist or GP, and call 999 for signs of a severe allergic reaction; we deal with pests, not with medical questions. This guide separates irritation from bites, and marks in rows on skin left uncovered in bed are worth checking against bed bugs instead.
Tell us which rooms have larvae or damage, what the floors are, whether birds have been going in and out anywhere on the roof, the bay or the porch, and what is kept in the loft. Before the visit, vacuum the carpet edges, under the beds and along the kickboard line, empty the cleaner outside into a sealed bag, and move what furniture you can so the perimeter is reachable. Anything woollen that has been chewed should be washed or cleaned and then bagged until the room has been dealt with. What the timescale depends on is covered in its own guide, and live larvae showing up beyond the period we give you is a reason to ring us again.
The prevention guide has the rest, the comparison with carpet moths settles which of the two you are dealing with, the borough page is Carpet Beetle Control Brent, and the Brent carpet beetle advice goes through identification and treatment. Roofs of the same pattern in neighbouring Sudbury give them the same opportunities.
It is £180 for the first room and £60 for each room after it, whether the larvae are in a bedroom carpet, an airing cupboard or a wardrobe of stored wool, so two bedrooms comes to £240. A cupboard, a wardrobe or a storage box counts as part of the room it stands in, and the hall, stairs and landing are not charged as rooms. Included in that are the preparation we talk you through beforehand and what is worth watching once the visit is over.
| Treatment | Price |
|---|---|
| Carpet Beetles – First Room | £180 |
| Carpet Beetles – Additional Room | £60 |
Very possibly. Once the young have gone, the larvae left in the lining go looking for food, and the nearest supply is through the roof edge into the bedroom behind it. Have the nest site cleared now that it is empty and treat the rooms where you are finding larvae.
Only once the birds have finished with it, and only if it can be reached safely from the ground, which a porch or bay roof usually cannot. It is straightforward work for a roofer or a gutter contractor, and ask for the debris underneath to be taken away as well, since that is the part the larvae are living in.
Not that room, necessarily. Adults walk towards the brightest window in the house, so the breeding site can be elsewhere. Look for what they can actually feed on: fluff under units, the strip behind a wardrobe, an airing cupboard, loft storage, and dead insects collected at a window.
Two rooms, so £240. The landing is not charged as a room and will still be looked at as the link between them. If you think the loft or the eaves are involved, mention it when you book.
They sometimes do, because the bristles cause contact irritation in some people while leaving others alone entirely. A pharmacist or a GP is the right person to ask about the rash; ring 999 if there are signs of a severe allergic reaction.
The traces beside the hole answer it faster than the hole does. A bristly brown grub and a scatter of empty skins mean beetles, while a smooth cream grub in a tube of webbing means moths. Either way the first room is £180 and the next is £60, so the answer changes the search rather than the bill.
A vacuum does the part of the floor you can see, and the larvae are living in the part you cannot: the edge under the gripper, the void behind a kickboard, the floor beneath a wardrobe. Use the crevice tool in those places, and remember that a nest above the ceiling keeps sending more down however thorough you are.

Tell us which rooms have larvae and whether birds have nested in the eaves, the bay roof or the porch, then book carpet beetle treatment.
