Tracing it without lifting the paving
Follow the workers outwards rather than inwards, on a warm afternoon when the traffic is heaviest, and mark the point where they vanish. Why Spraying the Trail Never Finishes It
A shop-bought spray kills the workers on the worktop, and those workers are a small fraction of the colony and the part it can most easily replace. The queen carries on laying, foraging picks up again within a day or two, and often the route simply shifts along the skirting by a metre. What to Expect Around an Ant Treatment
- Stop spraying a week beforehand if you can, so the workers are still running their usual route on the day
- Wipe worktops with warm soapy water instead, and lift pet bowls off the floor overnight
- Note the two or three points where ants come in, and where outdoors the trail disappears
- Say whether it is a house or a flat, and whether a garage, shed or garden office is involved
- Leave the paving, the drive and the shed base as they are rather than digging anything up first

Pharaoh Ants in the Flats Above the Parade
The flats over the shops near the station are the one setting around here where a different ant is worth ruling out. Making the Ground Less Attractive Afterwards

- Keep pots, compost bags and stacked furniture off the paving beside the wall so the ground beneath dries and cools
- Re-bed any slab that rocks, because the hollow underneath one is prime nesting ground
- Deal with aphids on roses, honeysuckle and shrubs near the back of the house, since ants farm them for honeydew and will work hard to protect the supply
- Sweep spilt bird seed off the paving and pick up windfall fruit before it sits there
- Wipe the fronts of the kitchen units at night as well as the worktop, as a scent trail survives on anything already walked over
