Where Willesden Ants Nest Around a Terrace
Black garden ants dig into loose, dry, sun-warmed material, and the sand bed under a paved front garden is exactly that. So is the strip of gravel or bare earth along a side path, the edge where paving meets the front wall, and the crumbling mortar at the foot of a low front boundary wall. A colony that is left alone can hold that spot for years, which is why the trail comes back to the same door each summer rather than moving about. Side doors, thresholds and the alley path
The way in is nearly always at floor level. Look at the threshold of the side door onto the alley, the worn step at the front door, the mortar joint where the path butts against the house, and the holes where a waste pipe or a boiler condensate pipe leaves the kitchen wall. Follow the trail indoors to the point where it disappears into the skirting, then go outside and look at the same spot from the other side — that is usually where the answer is. Warm kitchens in converted flats
In a house split into flats, the kitchen has often been fitted into what was a back room or the back addition, with pipes and cables boxed in behind the units. A ground-floor kitchen there sits close to the soil outside, and warmth plus crumbs behind an appliance make it worth the journey. Flying Ant Days Over the Paving
For a few humid days each July or August, colonies send out winged queens and males together, and a paved front garden can appear to be steaming with them. Outdoors, it passes in a day or two and needs nothing beyond keeping the front door shut. Booking and the Days Around the Visit
- Tell us whether it is a flat or a house, and which floor the kitchen is on
- Describe the entry point: front step, side door threshold, air brick, pipe hole or behind the units
- Stop spraying the trail — the ants need to be findable, and a wipe with warm soapy water is enough for the worktop
- Note where the trail goes outside: into a paving joint, along the path edge or under the front wall
- Keep food sealed, empty the bin more often in hot weather, and lift pet bowls overnight
