Ant Control Wembley

Ground-floor flats, podium courtyards and older gardens in HA9 and HA0 · £190 for a flat · £220 for a house

In the new blocks around Wembley Park, garden ants mostly bother the ground floor, especially flats whose patio doors open onto a podium courtyard or communal garden. Higher up, a trail of tiny pale ants in a warm kitchen can mean something else entirely: Pharaoh ants, which live inside heated buildings.

If ants keep coming back to your kitchen, book ant control: £190 for a flat, £220 for a house. Call 0800 955 2347.

Ants in Ground-Floor Flats Beside Wembley's Courtyards

A podium courtyard or communal garden brings planting, paving and raised beds right up to the doors of the ground-floor flats. Black garden ants nest in the soil of planters, under paving and along the edges of beds, and in warm weather the workers go foraging. The nearest food is often a kitchen a few steps inside a patio door. The ants on your floor belong to a colony outside, not one living in the flat.

Patio doors, thresholds and sills

Ants entering under a door frame

The usual route in is along the bottom of a sliding or folding patio door: the track, the threshold strip and any gap where the frame meets the floor. Ants also follow the edges of tall windows and come through openings where pipes or cables enter a ground-floor kitchen. Trace the trail back to where it enters the room, then look outside at the same spot. Why ants keep coming into the kitchen explains what draws them.

The courtyard is not yours to dig up

In a block, the courtyard and its planters are normally shared, and a contractor may look after the planting, so lifting slabs or tipping powder into beds is not a job for a resident. If ants are clearly coming from one planter or path, tell the building management as well as us, and note where. How to find an ant nest shows what to watch for without disturbing anything.

Pharaoh Ants in Heated Blocks

Trail of ants on a kitchen worktop near crumbs

Pharaoh ants are very small, pale yellow to light brown, and nest indoors in warm, hidden places such as wall voids, behind kitchen units and near heating pipes. They cannot survive a British winter outdoors, which is why they are linked with heated buildings rather than gardens. A trail on an upper floor, nowhere near soil, is a strong clue.

Why not to spray them

A Pharaoh ant colony has many queens and can break into several new colonies when it is disturbed, a habit known as budding. A spray or powder that kills the workers on the worktop can set that off, leaving more nests in more places. Put shop products away and read Pharaoh ants vs garden ants before doing anything else.

Why the whole block matters

Because a colony can spread along warm service routes, the ants in your kitchen may be connected to a neighbour's. Ask whether flats beside, above or below yours have seen tiny ants, and tell the building management if they have. That helps decide whether one flat or several need attention, and whether ants can nest inside walls explains why the nests are so hard to find.

Garden Ants in Older Wembley Houses

Ant nest mound beside a garden path

In the Edwardian and interwar houses around Wembley Central, Tokyngton and Barn Hill, the picture is more familiar: black garden ants nesting under a back patio, a path or the foot of a garden wall, and coming in at the back door. Flying ants rising from between slabs on a warm, humid day in summer mark exactly where one nest is. Why flying ants appear indoors covers what it means when they come up inside. Insects using one hole in the eaves for weeks on end are a wasp nest, not ants.

Booking and Afterwards

  • Say whether it is a flat or a house, which floor, and whether there are patio doors onto a courtyard or garden
  • Describe the ants: black and a few millimetres long, or tiny and pale
  • Mention whether neighbours have ants as well
  • Wipe up spills and keep food sealed, but leave the trail alone rather than spraying it

Ants may still be seen for a while after the visit, and how long depends on the kind of ant and where the colony is. How long ant treatment takes explains why. If numbers have not fallen, get back in touch and say where you are still seeing them. Small brown insects darting from under the cooker at night are more likely to be cockroaches than ants.

Keeping Ants Out of a Wembley Flat or House

A few habits help once the colony has been dealt with, and Ant Control Brent covers homes across the rest of the borough.

  • Keep the patio door track clear of crumbs and grit, and check the threshold seal is intact
  • Store sugar, cereal and pet food in sealed containers, above all in a ground-floor kitchen
  • Stand pots on your own terrace a little away from the door and the wall
  • Report cracked paving or gaps along the building edge in the courtyard to the building management
  • In a house, fill cracks along the back door step and sweep up spilt bird seed

FAQs

Ant Control Wembley FAQs

Why do ants only come into the ground-floor flats in our block?

Garden ants nest in soil and under paving, so the flats beside the courtyard or garden are closest to the colony. Upper floors see far fewer garden ants. If you live higher up and the ants are tiny and pale, they may be Pharaoh ants.

Can I treat the planters in the courtyard myself?

It is better not to, as the courtyard is normally communal and the planting may be looked after by a contractor. Tell the building management where the ants come from, and book ant control for your flat if they are getting in.

Shop spray has made the tiny ants turn up in more rooms. Why?

Disturbing a Pharaoh ant colony can make it split and set up new nests nearby. Stop spraying and note which rooms they are in now. Why ants come back after DIY treatment explains more.

Should I tell my neighbours we have ants?

Yes, particularly if they are Pharaoh ants, which can move between flats. Knowing whether the flats around yours have them helps work out how far the problem reaches.

Flying ants came in through our patio door. Do we need treatment?

Not always. Flying ants appear on a few warm days and then stop, and on their own they do not mean a nest indoors. A trail that keeps coming in afterwards is worth booking; when an ant problem needs treatment helps you decide.

We rent our flat. Who should arrange ant control?

Start by telling your landlord or letting agent in writing where the ants are and when you first saw them. Ant control for a flat is £190, whoever books it.

Our house near King Edward VII Park gets ants every summer. Why?

A garden with paths, patio and borders gives garden ants plenty of places to nest close to the back door. Look for small heaps of fine soil between slabs, and read how to stop ants getting in.
