Why a Sloping Plot Suits a Garden Ant Colony
A colony needs ground that warms up and stays dry, and every level change outside a house on a hill creates exactly that. The made-up ground behind a retaining wall drains freely; the sand bed under a patio that was laid to take out the fall sits above the natural soil and warms through by midday; the risers of a set of garden steps are often hollow behind. The path down the side and the steps to the front door
The side path is the hottest, driest strip of ground on the plot for most of the afternoon, and it runs the full length of the house with a mortar joint against the wall for most of its length. Front steps do the same job at the other end. Once a colony is settled under either, the workers only need a few inches of wall to cross before they reach an air brick, a threshold or a drilled hole. The Garage and the Side Door as the Way In
In a house with an attached or side garage, the ants rarely walk in at the back door. They come up under a garage door that has never sat flush on its threshold, cross a floor that is often a little cooler and quieter than the rest of the house, and then slip under the door into the utility room or the kitchen beyond. Warm kitchens at the back of a big house
What draws the trail the last few feet is warmth and sugar: the side of a fridge or freezer, a dishwasher that has just run, the gap behind a hob, and whatever has been spilled down the back of a cupboard. None of this is about how clean the kitchen is — ants are following a scent trail that every worker reinforces, and the trail is the thing that has to stop. Flying Ant Days Over the Hill
On two or three close, humid afternoons in July or August, colonies across the area release winged queens and males together, and an open lawn on rising ground can look as though it is smoking. Outdoors it is over in a day or so and needs nothing beyond keeping the doors shut. Small Pale Ants in a Converted Flat Are a Different Job
Where a house has been divided into flats, a trail of very small, pale yellowish ants running indoors through the winter is not a garden ant at all. That species nests inside heated buildings, spreads between flats along pipe and cable runs, and reacts badly to shop-bought sprays by splitting into more colonies in more rooms.
