A garden ant colony wants ground it can tunnel through without being flooded or disturbed, and landscaping delivers it: bedding sand beneath paving, the free-draining mix inside a raised planter, the strip of dry soil where a bed meets a wall. Colonies last for years, so a nest under a courtyard path may have been there far longer than the trail you have just noticed. Almost everything you see indoors is a foraging line, not a nest. Ants farm aphids for the honeydew they produce, protecting them on shrubs, climbers and young trees and carrying the sugar back to the nest. That is why a column of ants may run up a courtyard wall, a downpipe or a trellis without heading indoors at all. A trail that ends on a plant is a gardening matter; one that ends at a threshold is worth acting on.
Patio doors and pipe entries at ground level
The way in to a ground-floor flat is almost always at the bottom of something: the track of a sliding patio door, the threshold strip where it meets the floor finish, the hole where a waste pipe leaves the kitchen, the edge of a floor-length window. The older terraces and semis behind the canal give ants the same materials in a different arrangement: a garden path, a patio against the back wall, a front path and the bedding sand under all three. Flying Ant Days Along the Canal
For a handful of warm, humid days each summer, colonies send winged queens and males into the air together, and a stretch of open ground beside water brings several nests out at once. Watching them stream up from a joint in the courtyard paving tells you precisely where a nest is, and within a day or two it is over. Winged ants coming up through a kitchen floor, from under a skirting or around a pipe box, are a different matter, because the nest may be beneath the floor rather than outside; say so when you book. Pharaoh ants are minute, yellowish and almost see-through, and they nest inside warm buildings instead of in the ground. They are associated with heated blocks, where boxed pipe runs, service risers and the warmth behind kitchen units give them everything they need. A trail several floors up, nowhere near soil, in a kitchen or a bathroom, is the clue that these are not garden ants that have climbed.
